In his definitive guide to macrobiotics, “The Macrobiotic Way”, Mr. Michio Kushi discussed the importance of whole grains, particularly brown rice, for macrobiotic diet.

According to “the standard macrobiotic diet”, 50-60% of food intake will comprise of whole cereal grains. In a typical main meal, 50-60% of the food will be a bowl of delicious cooked brown rice, plus 20-30% vegetables, 5-10% beans and sea vegetables, and 5-10% soups.

The elegance of this design is its simplicity. High quality organic whole grains are very affordable. They are available year around, also convenient to store. The preparation and cooking of whole grains are relatively routines with thousands of years of time proved tradition.

The ratio between brown rice and water can be adjusted as appropriate. Since the brown rice is cooked through pressured steam, the rice has no direct contact to heat, so no more burning rice!

Electronic Pressure Cooker for Brown Rice

A less traditional way to cook brown rice is to use electronic pressure cooker. Some observers believe gas stove is better heat source compared to electronic stove, or microwave. The suspicion is that electronic and magnetic field or microwave may affect internal food structure. There are some experiments supporting this argument indirectly. However, in case of brown rice, electronic pressure cooker is so much more convenient. Here is Fagor electronic pressure cooker. It is so good for brown rice cooking. It is highly recommended for healthy people.

It is very quite with just a little bit of steam released. Normally short grain brown rice can be well cooked with this  about total 50 minutes. Long grain and medium grain usually take less time to cook.
