Champion Juicer + Hydraulic Press
The Champion Juicer operates on the mastication process. It chews the fibers and breaks up the cells of vegetables and fruits. When Champion Juicer is used as homogenizer (i.e. no screen is placed), the yield mass are put into filtration bag, then applied on the Welles Press (also called People’s Press), the pulp free beautiful juice will flow into a receptacle, and the filtration bag will only contain the very dry pulp to be discarded. The juice contains most of the nutrients and enzymes of the living fresh vegetables and fruits.
The Welles Press is a manually operated hydraulic press where Norwalk juicer has electronic powered press. By leverage, the Welles Press can yield more juice with drier pulp. The vital nutrients are also better preserved in the juice.

Comparing Juicer Extractors
Some nutritional health researchers believe that the enzymes are “life” of fresh vegetables, fruits and young plant leaves. So enzyme activity, a measure of the amount of oxidation and degradation that occurs during juice extraction, should be used as an important benchmark for juicer extractor. The juice extractor that produces juice with higher enzyme activity will be more preferable to that with lower enzyme activity.

According to his report “A Comparison of Juicer Extractors: Enzymes“, two-step triturator/press type like Norwalk Juicer/Champion+People’s Press, can produce juice with highest enzyme activity. The twin-gear type (Green Power, Green Star, Green Life) juicer produced juice is slightly lower but almost as good. Champion juicer is better than all centrifugal juicers. Of the 4 centrifugal juicers, Omega juicer can produce juice with highest enzyme activity. Average amylase activity from the Norwalk juicer was 1.5-fold higher than the Omega, and 3-fold higher than the Juiceman Jr. Average peroxidase activity from the People’s Press was about 20% higher than the Norwalk or Green Life juicers, about 50% higher than the Omega, and about 2.5-fold higher than Juiceman II or Juiceman Jr. The People’s Press also extracted the most juice, 1.5 fold more than the Green Life juicer, making it the top choice for both quality and quantity of juice produced.
Both Champion Juicer and People’s Press have the same slow masticating mechanism to break down the produce (it is carrot here), the difference is the juice extraction step. The use of the manual hydraulic press yields higher quality and higher quantity of juice.
Both Norwalk Juicer and People’s Press have two-step process. Norwalk has an electronic grinder running at 3600 RPM, where Champion Homogenizer has masticating mechanism running at 1725 RPM. Both have hydraulic press, which should produce similar quality of juice. The People’s Press is manually operated, so probably yield higher volume of juice.
The Green Life is much easier to operate comparing to the two-step juicers. Yet, the quality of juice is close to that of two-step juicers. It should be a good choice too.
In another study by Michael Donaldson, PhD., of Hallelujah Acres Foundation, “Comparison of Juice Extractors“, three juice extractors are chosen to compare how long the juice can be stored after extraction. Here are the results:
The Green Star juicer is a twin gear juicer similar to Green Life. The two gears crush the fruits and vegetables instead of cutting them. These twin gears rotate at approximately 110 RPM’s, which is very slow compared to the other juicers. When comparing the triturating twin gears of the Green Star with the blade of the Champion, the twin gears cause less oxidation, therefore providing more enzymes in the juice. Exposure to air is greatly reduced and this juicer produces little foam (another source of oxidation). This juicer also handles green leafy vegetables and cereal grasses extremely efficiently, as well as carrots. Juice from this juicer, under optimal conditions, will keep well for up to 72 hours when stored in individual serving size containers, filled to the top so that no oxygen can reach the juice, and stored in the coldest part of the refrigerator. The stored juice will retain approximately 85% of the activity of the measured enzymes.
The Champion Juicer is considered a masticating juicer. This juicer grates the vegetables at a slower rate than a centrifugal juicer. The blade in the Champion turns at approximately 1725 RPMs thereby reducing the oxidation of the juice. Exposure to air is reduced in the Champion juicer as compared to the centrifugal juicer. The Champion produces quite a bit of foam (another source of oxidation). This juicer is unable to handle green leafy vegetables easily. The stored juice will retain approximately 85% of the activity of the measured enzymes . The shelf life of the juice made with the Champion juicer is about 72 hours when stored in individual serving size containers, filled to the top so that no oxygen can reach the juice and stored in the coldest part of the refrigerator.
Centrifugal Juicer- Juiceman
Centrifugal juicers have a spinning basket often spinning at 3,000 – 7,000 RPMs. Large amounts of air are pulled through the basket in the juicing process. This oxidizes the juice very quickly, resulting in a lower amount of enzymes and other nutrients that may be present in the juice. The darker, richer color of juice from the Champion and Green Star juicers indicates a more complete extraction of the nutrients. The measured enzyme activity of the juice made with a centrifugal juicer is only about 32%-51%, and should be consumed immediately for maximum benefit.
